What is a Tweetup?

Tweetups have been around for centuries. Back in the days of yore, co-workers had tweetups after work. Friends had tweetups over wine and… oooh, wine. What were we talking about? The cavemen even had tweetups around their campfires. They used to be called “meetups” or “social gatherings” but then twitter came along and made them SO MUCH COOLER.

Then came that fateful day that two worlds collided: Twitter… meet IndyCar. IndyCar… meet twitter. You two will be BFF. It’ll be smashing.

In much the same way, two random chicks just happened to cross a social-media-licious path. @happyfish103… meet @the_race_gIRL. And so began the greatest spectacle in social networking.

At its core, a tweetup is a gathering of people. In regards to May Indy Tweetup (and Winter Indy Tweetup), don’t let the name fool you. You don’t have to be on twitter to join us. You don’t have to be on facebook either. You may never have heard of the internet before and you can still come. Although we recommend that you check it out – we hear this world wide web thing will probably be sticking around for awhile.

ALSO… you don’t even have to be an IndyCar fan. Will you meet a ton of them? Yes. Will you think we’re all drinking the kool-aid? Yes. But let us show you why this sport is thrilling, sexy, fun, fast and unbelievably epic. The IndyCar Nation wants new fans. It means great things for the future of the sport and, let’s face it, bigger and better tweetups.

If you’ve been to a tweetup before, leave a comment below with one of your favorite memories. If you’ve never been, let us answer your questions… even if your question is, “Do you guys serve drinks at these tweetups?” The answer is yes. And they’re delicious. We can’t wait to reconnect with our IndyCar tweeps and meet new ones on May 26. See you at #MIT!

I met my fiancee at the inaugural Winter Indy Tweetup! That by far is the greatest memory! Adding to that, I had the chance to meet new people and make some great friends. I almost want camping with friends instead (yeah, in December), but decided to give the Tweetup a shot. By far, the best decision I’ve ever made.
